Which material is the fixed-angle rotor for tubes made of?
The fixed-angle rotor is made of massive, anodized aluminum. This material is durable and has got a good chemical resistance. The rotor lid is made of the same material.
Which material is the inner centrifuge lid made of?
The inner lid of the Centrifuge 5418 is made of high-quality V2A stainless steel.
What is the minimum selectable rotational speed of the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R?
The minimum selectable speed is 100 rpm. This is equivalent to an rcf of approx. 1 x g.
My Centrifuge 5418 displays "EP". What does that mean?
"EP" is displayed when the automatic standby function is active. It is not an error code. If the centrifuge remains unused for more than 15 min., the standby function is activated, indicated by "EP" on the display. By using any key or knob or closing the centrifuge lid, the centrifuge is re-activated and ready to use. The letters "EP" were chosen because a lot of Eppendorf products already have this prefix in their name.
Can the fixed-angle rotor FA-45-18-11 be operated without a rotor lid?
The fixed-angle rotor FA-45-18-11 can be used with or without rotor lid. With rotor lid the centrifugation is aerosol-tight and the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R is even quieter. The aerosol-tight centrifugation can only be carried out with the rotor lid. Especially when working with pathogenic microorganisms, we recommend the usage of the aerosol-tight lid. When centrifuging filter devices like spin columns or other comparable tubes, the aerosol-tight rotor lid must be used in any case. This protects the centrifuge from damage – e. g. by torn-off tube lids.
Can the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R be opened in case of a power failure?
"Yes, the device has got an emergency lid release. Before opening the centrifuge, pull the power plug and wait until the rotor stops spinning.
The centrifuge 5418 has an emergency lid release via a cord that is located on the underside of the device in the base plate. Remove the white plastic cap and pull the cord downwards.
The centrifuge 5418 R has an emergency lid release behind a plastic cover on the right side of the device. Rotate the plastic cover counterclockwise and remove it. Enter the centrifuge rotor key into the hexagonal opening at rear until some resistance can be felt. Slightly press and turn the rotor key counterclockwise."
Can the sealing of the aerosol-tight rotor FA-45-18-11 be exchanged?
The sealing of the aerosol-tight rotor FA-45-18-11 can very easily be exchanged. A detailed description with illustrations can be found in the operating manual, which can be downloaded from our website.
How did you manage to make the device so quiet?
The Centrifuge 5418 has an inner centrifuge lid which reduces the noise emission to a low level.
Which tubes can be used in the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R?
1.5 ml and 2.0 ml Eppendorf® tubes can be spun in the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R. With the help of adapters, the centrifugation of 0.2 ml PCR tubes, 0.6 ml Microtainer, 0.5 ml and 0.4 ml micro tubes is also possible. Even so-called spin columns (e.g. Quiagen, Macherey-Nagel, Vivascience) can be centrifuged. For centrifugation of spin columns, the rotor lid must be used.
How can the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R be cleaned?
The Centrifuge 5418/5418 R can be cleaned with neutral detergents. For disinfection, we recommend alcohol or alcoholic disinfectants. Make sure that the relevant legal requirements and directives are observed when choosing the disinfection method.

In which increments can the rotational speed/g-force be adjusted?
The rotational speed can be adjusted in increments of 100 rpm, the g-force (rcf) can be adjusted in increments of 100 x g.
How can the speed display be switched from rotational speed (rpm) to relative centrifugal force (rcf, g-force)?
The display of the centrifuge 5418 is switched back and forth between rpm and rcf by pressing the "rpm/rcf" key. At the centrifuge 5418 R one has to press the rotory button for speed for this issue.
In which increments can the time be adjusted?
"In the centrifuge 5418, for a run time up to 10 min the increments are 0.5 min steps, after that it is set in increments of 1 min up to 9:59 h. The function for continuous run mode can be found above 9:59 h and below 0.5 min The symbol ""oo"" is displayed to indicate the continuous run.
In the centrifuge 5418 R, for a run time up to 10 min the increments are 0.5 min steps, after that it is set in increments of 1 min up to 99 min. The function for continuous run mode can be found above 99 min and below 0.5 min. The symbol ""oo"" is displayed to indicate the continuous run."
For which applications can I use the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R?
"The rotor of the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R allows a broad variety of applications. Up to 18 micro
test tubes can be centrifuged at 16,873 x g. It can be used with tubes from 0.2 up to 2.0 ml. The
potential applications include:
- Isolation of DNA, RNA and proteins
- Spin columns
- Aerosol-tight centrifugation of infectious samples
- Pelletizing of cells (bacteria, eukaryotic cells) up to 2.0 ml
- Spinning down of PCR mixtures in tubes"

How do I recognize aerosol-tight rotors?
"Firstly, the aerosol-tight rotors can be recognized by their designation abbreviation “FA”, where the
letter “A” indicates the aerosol tightness; secondly, we have color-coded the aerosol-tight rotors.
All aerosol-tight rotors now have a red rotor lid screw, and a red ring is printed on to the rotor

"At Eppendorf, the safety of the user always has the highest priority. That is why we now fit our
centrifuges with aerosol-tight rotors as standard – at no extra charge."
When does the opening of the centrifuge lid take place automatically or manually?
"Following the end of a centrifuge run, only the lid of the Centrifuge 5418 is automatically opened in
order to provide quicker access to the sample and to avoid potential heat accumulation.
The Centrifuge 5418 R is not equipped with the automatic opening of the centrifuge lid. In order to
maintain a consistent temperature in the rotor chamber and in the sample, the centrifuge lid for
this device must always be manually opened by pressing the ""open"" key."
What does the number “5418” and the letter "R" in the centrifuge name mean?
"The last two digits of the numbers of the centrifuges 5418, 5418 R, 5424, 5424 R, 5430 and 5430
R indicate the maximum capacity of the centrifuge for standard micro test tubes. With the
Centrifuge 5418, for example, 18 micro test tubes can be centrifuged simultaneously. The letter
""R"" stands for the word ""refrigerated"" and indicates for the Centrifuge 5418 R that this device is
Can the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R be operated in the cooling room at 4° C?
"The Centrifuge 5418 can be operated at an ambient temperature in the range from 2° C to 40° C.
Operation in the cooling room at a temperature of 4° C is therefore possible. The permitted range
of the ambient temperature is between 15 °C and 35 °C for the Centrifuge 5418 R, so that this
centrifuge could not be operated in a cooling room at 4 °C."
Does the lid latch have to be serviced or greased at regular intervals?
"No, in order to ensure the full functionality of the lid latch, it must not be cleaned or greased. If you
feel that this is nevertheless necessary, please contact our Technical Service. The contact

What is "Fast Temp" (Centrifuge 5418 R)?
"The ""Fast Temp"" function is a temperature control run of the Centrifuge 5418 R without samples
and with a rotor and temperature-specific rotational speed in order to quickly bring the rotor
chamber, incl. the rotor, buckets and adapters, to the set nominal temperature.
In order that the samples can be centrifuged from the beginning on at the desired temperature,
one starts this temperature control run during sample preparation by pressing the ""Fast Temp""
key. The display shows the current temperature and g force (rcf) or speed (rpm) as well as “FT” as
symbol for a “Fast Temp” temperature run. You can find a more detailed description in the
operating manual of the Centrifuge 5418/5418 R."
For the 5418 R, when does the continuous cooling of the rotor chamber start?
"The continuous cooling starts with each rotor standstill of the Centrifuge 5418 R in order to
maintain the preselected nominal temperature of the rotor chamber not only during centrifugation.
To this purpose the following prerequisites must be met:
- The centrifuge is switched on.
- The centrifuge lid is closed.
- The nominal temperature is lower than the ambient temperature.
Continuous cooling is ended by opening the centrifuge lid."
What is the temperature range of the Centrifuge 5418 R?
With the Centrifuge 5418 R it is possible to set the temperature within a range from 0 °C to +40 °C.
