Multipette® M4
The Eppendorf Multipette M4 is the ideal precision instrument for completing long pipetting series with viscous, volatile, infectious, toxic or radioactive liquids.
The ideal precision instrument for completing long pipetting ordispensing series. Even liquids which are difficult to pipette areno match for the Multipette M4.
On the Multipette/Combitip system, volumes are dispensedusing the positive displacement principle.
The liquid isdirectly dispensed without an air cushion, ensuring thecorrect volume is always dispensed regardless of the density, viscosity and volatility of the liquid.
In addition to serialdispensing, the Multipette is also the perfect instrument thatis able to go beyond the limitations of a standard pipette.

Features
How it works
The right Combitip advanced is always at your fingertips!9 diff erent volume sizes (0.1 mL–50 mL) for the Combitipsadvanced, along with the Multipette M4, off er a unique volumerange of 1 μL–10 mL. With 3 different purity grades (Eppendorf Quality, PCR sterile, Biopur®), you will always fi nd the right tip for your application.
An Eppendorf Combitip advanced, in the required size, issimply attached and automatically recognised via a sensor inthe Multipette M4. The volume is set using the selection dialand is automatically shown in the display. Now all you haveto do is aspirate the liquid with the filling lever.
The desired volume can now be dispensed in several stepsusing the utmost precision. Dispense the same volume upto 100 times without refilling the tip—a logical solution forfi lling 96-well plates.
The executed dispensing steps are counted using the newstep counter feature and shown in the easy-to-read display. After use, the Combitip advanced is simply ejected bypushing a button and disposed of without the risk ofcontamination or directly touching the tip.
Simple operation, unique flexibility and significant timesavings make the Multipette M4 an important liquidhandling tool for both novel research and routine tasks.
The measuring values of the analysis scales are multiplied by the correction factor Z (see SOP pipettes). This takes into account the density of the water at the relevant temperature and the relevant air.
ISO 8655 addresses the needs of suppliers, test houses, and users and specifies the general requirements for piston-operated liquid handling devices. It is structured in seven chapters:
ISO 8655-1: Terminology, general requirements, and user recommendations
ISO 8655-2: Piston pipettes
ISO 8655-3: Piston burettes
ISO 8655-4: Dilutors
ISO 8655-5: Dispensers
ISO 8655-6: Gravimetric method for the determination of measurement error
ISO 8655-7: Non-gravimetric methods for assessment of equipment performance (titration, photometry)
The systematic error describes the deviation of the dispensed volume from the nominal volume or from the selected volume of the piston stroke device, and is determined by establishing the mean value of (usually) 10 measurements. The random error describes the mean variation of the dispensed volumes from the mean value of the dispensed volumes, and is determined by calculating the repeat standard deviation of (usually) 10 measurements.
The Z factor is included in EN ISO 8655-6 and was incorporated into our SOP. As we understand it, it was incorporated in the standard by the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig.
The Z factor describes the density of water at a particular temperature using a 5th degree polynomial. Furthermore, the density of water is corrected by the density of air (derived from air pressure) and a fixed correction value for balances. These corrections are the key reasons for the deviation from density values in various books of tables.
To calibrate Multipettes/Repeaters in accordance with EN ISO 8655, three different volumes with ten measured values each have to be checked. These three volumes are the nominal volume (= the maximum volume to be dispensed), 50% of the nominal volume and 10% of the nominal volume of the Combitips advanced used. The checking procedure, the test conditions, and the limits in accordance with EN ISO 8655 are described in our "Eppendorf SOP for checking pipettes". The SOP is available on our web page.
No, the Multipette/Repeater M4 cannot be autoclaved. We recommend wiping the device with a cloth that has been moistened with a disinfectant (e.g. 60% isopropanol, 12% bleach). Please ensure that no moisture can get into the device during cleaning.
Yes, with the Multipette/Repeater M4, Combitips advanced can be partially filled as well. To ensure accurate dosing, it is mandatory that the pistons of the Combitips advanced are moved to a defined position after aspiration. Discard the steps by pressing the operating lever until the display stops flashing and “steps 0” is displayed. If the selection dial position is below 4, several steps must be discarded.
When using a positive displacement system, the dispenser and the dispenser tip must be perfectly matched. This will ensure that the high demands with regard to precision and accuracy are reliably met. Combitips advanced are perfectly matched to Eppendorf Multipettes and, therefore, to the Multipette/Repeater M4. In combination with the center sleeve of the Multipette M4, accurate dosing for wall dispensing is supported in particular.
During the development of the Multipette/Repeater M4, the use of materials with a high chemical resistance was a priority. Of course, the chemical resistance of the Combitips advanced is also relevant here. You can find a detailed list of the chemical resistance for both products in the corresponding operating manual or in the instructions for use.
With the Combitip advanced 0.1 mL in selector dial position 1 and the Combitip advanced 0.2 mL in selector dial position 0.5, a volume of 2 µL can be dispensed in a free jet. All volumes can be dispensed in a free jet, if handled correctly. If you want to carry out all dispensing steps as a free jet, the reverse stroke should be dispensed in a free jet as well. Please note that the technical data document recommends wall dispensing.
The life of the battery very much depends on the type and frequency of use. To extend the life of the battery as much as possible, the Multipette M4 goes into sleep mode when it is not in use. You should also remove the Combitips advanced immediately after use and not store the Multipette M4 with the Combitip advanced inserted to extend the life of the battery.
If the battery symbol only shows with one segment, the battery capacity is very low. A few more dosing series can be carried out. Have a replacement battery to hand. As soon as the empty battery symbol appears, the battery should be replaced.
Yes. The Multipette/Repeater M4 also works without a battery. The precision of the dosing is due to the reliable mechanics of the Multipette/Repeater M4. It will not be affected if the battery fails. To help with the selection of the correct dispensing volume, a volume table is included in the short instructions and in the operating manual. In addition, the Combitips advanced indicate the dispensing volume in selector dial position 1. This volume can be multiplied with the selector dial position to calculate the set dispensing volume.
The symbol means that the Multipette/Repeater M4 has been developed in accordance with the considerations of the Eppendorf PhysioCare concept. With its three areas, the concept includes the whole range of ergonomics, not just a single element. Instead of focusing on a particular product feature, the products with the PhysioCare symbol provide a holistic solution. Further details on the PhysioCare Concept® are available at http://physiocare.eppendorf.com.
Yes. If the Multipette/Repeater M4 is held at an angle that is too flat (< 45°C), dosing accuracy is affected. Hold the device as upright as possible, but in a position that is comfortable for you. Even when dispensing the last step, the Multipette/Repeater M4 should be held as straight as possible.
The Multipette/Repeater M4 has a step counter. If a Combitip advanced is used alongside “steps” (here: dispensing steps), the number of dispensing steps that can be carried out with a full Combitip advanced is displayed. During dispensing, the number of dispensing steps that have already been carried out are displayed. When the selector dial position is adjusted, the number of dispensing steps that can still be carried out is displayed.
Yes, the step counter also counts the dispensing steps that were carried out when the Combitip advanced is only partially filled once. As with a full Combitip, the reverse stroke must be carried out first (display flashes). Please note with this type of filling that the step counter continues to count beyond the residual stroke lock.
To eject the Combitips advanced, push the lower filling lever down as far as it will go (dispensing the remaining volume). Then the Combitip advanced can be ejected without touching it, by pressing the upper operating lever.
RFID is the abbreviation for “Radio Frequency Identification”. In this area, the Multipette/Repeater M4 has an integrated chip that has data (e.g. the serial number) saved on it which can be read out with a reader and the corresponding Eppendorf software (TrackIt).
Yes. The Multipette/Repeater M4 comes with a holder which can be inserted in a pipette carousel or it can be fixed to a clean glass or ceramic surface using the enclosed adhesive strip.
